IRIG-B is a timecode, originally defined by the Inter-Range Instrumentation Group.
Extracted from the worldwide GPS signal, it is used for synchronization of measurements in industrial an military applications as missile tracking, ballistics or projectile tracking.

The most widely used IRIG-B code is an amplitude-modulated 1 KHz sinus signal, which provides once every second: the day of the year, as well as the hour, minute and second of the day, referring to the 0-meridian (Greenwich, Great Britain, GMT).

In high-speed recordings taken with Mikrotron´s MotionBLITZ® Cube4, or Cube5, this timestamp is attached to every recorded image at the moment of exposure. At the same time the zero-crossing of the IRIG-B carrier signal synchronizes the start of an exposure, precise to the fraction of a microsecond.

Every exposed frame, no matter on which place on earth, independent of the frame rate set in the MotionBLITZ Cube, has therefore been taken at exactly the same time.

The IRIG-B signal is simply fed into the digital input no.3 of the camera to synchronize the camera automatically.

A wide range of inexpensive pc boards and devices is available for the reception of the GPS signal and to supply the IRIG-B signal. (e.g.: )
